Happy opening day!

No votes yet

I love hotdogs in the morning.

But only on the opening day of the baseball season. Unfortunately, I didn't stop this morning, because I needed to get a leg up on this week's workload. But I have to say that I have eaten a free Dome dog at 7 a.m., as has become the tradition of true Minnesota Twins fans the last few years.

I've been thinking about a lot of things concerning these Twinks the last few days (read: months), including:

- I won't be going to the game tonight. That's a big sacrifice for me, since I always go to the opener. But there is an important city council meeting about which many of the Jordanites who do attend the ballgame will want to know when they get back to town. Gotta do the job, right?

- Wouldn't tonight be a nice night for outdoor baseball? Nothing like 40-degree weather to get the blood boiling. (I'm being sarcastic, sure, but to tell you the truth, come 2010 and a new ballpark, I'd probably just bundle up and bear it. I love baseball that much.)

- So far, I've appreciated AM 1500's coverage of the Twins, but I just heard a somewhat distasteful ad on the radio station that is the new home of my favorite team. Like the day the Victoria's Secret catalog arrives in the mail ... the big day is finally here ... the opening day of baseball season? C'mon. With that, I was not impressed.

- Michael Cuddyer tore up spring training, batting .348, eighth in the Grapefruit League. I'm not his biggest fan, but if he's for real, then so be it. I'll eat my shorts then.

- Luis Castillo hit .436 this spring, second in the Grapefruit League. He's the best.

- Justin Morneau, reigning American League most valuable player, had 13 runs batted in. Luis Rodriguez, who barely made the team, had 12 RBI, as many home runs as Morney, and fewer strikeouts than the first baseman. But the Twins continue to rip on Rodriguez and kept Alejandro Machado (who is a big, injured question mark) on the roster. I guess I agree with the Machado move, because we haven't seen what he can do yet. I don't want to lose L-Rod.

- Herb Carneal was a great announcer. I'm sick of hearing people say that Twins fans will remember him as a great person, too. I'm sad that he died, but I don't know him really. His work on the mic was much appreciated, however.

- Not only do the Twins have a low budget for their players, but they won't spend a dime to get someone we've heard of to sing the national anthem. Paris Bennett, a former "American Idol" loser? I'd rather have a high school choir sing it.

- Wally the Beerman made an appearance at a Twins rally at the Mall of America today. Oh, some other people came too ...

Happy opening day! Go Twins.
