Is former St. John's school endangered?

If the historic St. John the Baptist Catholic School building is endangered, it will be affirmed at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

I'm planning to attend a ceremony during which the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota is likely to place the nearly 99-year-old former school at the intersection of highways 21 and 282 on its 2007 list of 10 Most Endangered Historic Places. The list is meant to draw attention to buildings that are significant and worth preserving.

Of the 113 properties that have made an endangered-places list in the past 14 years, about one-half have been "saved," according to the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota's Web site.

For the former St. John's school, that might not be the case. The city is under pressure to develop a new library, as well as a police station and a city hall. The site of the former school is one of the city's options for a city hall and library -- in fact, it's the first choice of a task force that spent months examining the possibilities.

I am working on stories for the Web site and the May 10 edition of your local paper. Check back on www.jordannews.com at about 4 p.m. tomorrow, when I will find out for sure if the former school made the list of endangered historic places.
