Council proceeds with process to OK 2 a.m. bar closing time

» Read similar stories filed under:

Continuing with the process it started two weeks ago, the Jordan City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would allow later bar closing times in the city.

Two weeks ago, the council asked Jordan Police Chief Bob Malz to draft an ordinance that would make it legal for select bars -- the ones with permits -- to stay open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Malz came back to the council tonight with a proposal to include more than just weekends in the ordinance.

"I assumed the council would've extended it to include New Year's Eve -- popular holiday," Malz said.

The public reading was the first of two required to pass before a proposed ordinance can become local law. Sally Schultz was the only councilmember to vote against the ordinance.

Brewers of Jordan owner Mike Donovan had requested the move, which Malz said had been twice denied by previous city councils. The previous proposals, though, did not limit the later closing times to weekends, Malz said.
