At council meeting, residents speak out about highway project

More than 35 residents sat through the first part of the Jordan City Council meeting tonight. Several spoke during the public comment part of the meeting.

One of them was Pete Ewals.

"When you move the road closer to the church, it's not going to move further away," he said. "It keeps encroaching and getting closer and closer."

Ewals had a number of other questions and comments:

- The Hillside Drive resident asked if the access to the parish center and garage would be cut off from Highway 282. City Engineer Carol Caron said no.

- Ewals questioned how much it would cost for the city to get easements to move Highway 282 to the south. Residents homes are to the south of the highway. The city did not have an answer to that question, Mayor Ron Jabs said.

- The Minnesota Department of Transportation only does sound mitigation "when it's economically feasible," he said. "It's on the backs of the parishioners."

- Then, Ewals got louder. "I think we can do better ...," he said. "Now you're trying to ram it down our throats. I say enough is enough." Jabs used his gavel to silence Ewals, who returned to the audience.
