Council denies mid-block crosswalk

» Read similar stories filed under:

The Jordan City Council unanimously voted to deny a request for a crosswalk on Hope Avenue, between Hope Lutheran Church and the Minnesota River Valley Special Education Cooperative school.

Monday's vote came after the Todd Wuollet, owner of Praise the Children daycare center, which is housed at Hope, and John Engfer, a member at the church, spoke in favor of the proposal.

The Jordan Public Safety Committee's recommendation was to deny all requests for mid-block crossings, those that are not at intersections, Jordan Police Chief Bob Malz told the council. The council voted to deny Praise the Children's request, which would have cost an estimted $6,325.

"Paint really doesn't protect anybody," Mayor Ron Jabs said. "They are expected at intersections, and even that ... is questionable."

The council is likely to address the issue of trails and crosswalks after the start of construction work on the Jordan Valley Townhomes project, which will be near the intersection of Hope Avenue and Old Highway 169.
