The Jordan City Council approved a new stop sign at the intersection of Fourth and Wood streets.
Southbound traffic on Wood Street already stops at a stop sign. The council decided Monday to add a stop sign for northbound traffic as well.
The Jordan Public Safety Committee recommended the measure, citing poor sight lines at the intersection.
The committee also made these recommendations on four other requests:
- A proposed stop sign at the intersection of Third and Wood streets was denied at the request of the committee. Police Chief Bob Malz said that no special circumstances exist at the intersection.
"Pretty much anybody could make the same arguments for pretty much any intersection in town," Malz told the city council.
- Although the committee felt that 185th Street would eventually serve as a collector street, it recommended that no stop sign be added at the street's intersection with Corporate Drive. Traffic is minimal, Malz said.
- A request for a crosswalk from Hope Lutheran Church to the Jordan Public Schools campus was tabled. Hope Avenue has become busier since an extension opened, connecting it with Old Highway 169, Malz said.
The request has merit, he said, because daycare children cross the street in that area like "little ducks in a line."
- The council directed City Engineer Carol Caron to ask the Minnesota Department of Transportation to fund additional right turn lanes from County Road 9 and from Highway 282 onto Highway 169. Malz wrote in a memo that drivers sometimes try to get "creative" when they want to turn right at the two-lane intersection.
The city council followed each of the committee's recommendations, voting 6-0. Councilmember Jeremy Goebel was absent from the meeting.
