Tonight, the Jordan City Council entered into an agreement with Xcel Energy for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of 14 new streetlights along Highway 282.
The city will pay $116,568 to go with a new style of streetlight, according to the agreement, which passed 5-0. Councilmembers David Hanson and Barry Ullmann were absent from the meeting. Xcel will maintain the streetlights for 25 years, City Engineer Carol Caron said.
Acron-style streetlights will be a thing of the past, as the council decided on the Evans style, which has an arm stretching out over the sidewalks.
Several months ago, the council authorized Xcel Energy to install a dozen
150-watt streetlights at a cost of $90,055, or about
$7,500 per light. In April, the council talked about adding four
more streetlights -- two near the intersection of Highway 282 and East
Street, two west of Mertens Street and near the highway bridge over
Sand Creek.
Last month, Xcel gave the city a quote of $40,645 for the additional four streetlights, roughly $10,000 apiece, so the council decided to add
two streetlights near the Sand Creek bridge, forgoing the suggested
streetlights near the intersection of the highway and East Street.
The increased cost per streetlight is due to the amount of wiring
that would be run to the four streetlights, which were not originally
included in the $2.8 million highway reconstruction project set to take
place this summer.
Jordan pays Xcel a $6.91 monthly fee for each of the Evans light fixtures, according to the agreement.
The money for the streetlights would come partially from assessments
and partially from bonding, Finance Director Tom Nikunen said.
