For two reasons -- pouring rain and "Purple Rain" -- I believe what I witnessed yesterday was the best Super Bowl ever.
I'm not a big football fan, but I do watch once a year or maybe a little more than that. I'm a social football fan, much like a "social drinker" but with sports TV. Football should be watched in strict moderation.
'Purple Rain'
Prince was unbelievable last night.
I hate halftime shows, especially overextended Super Bowl halftime shows. But Prince knocked my socks off.
Before the best halftime show in Super Bowl history, I thought maybe I'd post an online forum to the effect of "If Prince is performing at the Super Bowl, does that mean he's hit the pinnacle of his career -- or the twilight?" Usually, the halftime Super Bowl acts are either lame or washed up, in my opinion.
But, like I said, Prince came out with guns a-blazin'. He was fantastic.
I love that he jammed a little, played some covers, and then -- wham! -- hit us with "Purple Rain" while singing in the pouring rain.
Also, there was that gimmick with the sheet flying in the wind and Prince's shadow cast on it -- awesome. I'm a fan of aesthetics, and this was just one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen.
What do you think they going to do with the Sign-shaped stage?
Pouring rain
The game was slick, too -- literally.
This game had everything I like about football -- scoring early and often, hard hits, missed kicks, slippery footballs, a sloppy field, botched snaps, back-to-back turnovers, interceptions, stripped footballs, injuries, scrums that look more like ogres playing rugby, diving catches, and pouring rain.
I loved seeing the best two teams in football miss multiple passes off their chests and helmets.
It was funny to listen to the announcers talk about the Bears dominant, ball-stripping defense just as they lost the ball, fumbling it back to the Colts.
"This is the most precious thing in football," no-duh commentator Boomer Esiason said while holding up the pigskin. "You gotta hold onto it!"
I have to admit that the Colts' Peyton Manning still looked good, even in the rain. His throws are so smooth -- wow! Esiason was right about one thing: This should not be remembered as the Super Bowl lost by Rex Grossman but as Peyton Manning's Super Bowl.
I'd say this 31-17 Colts win was one of the best ever. But the halftime show made it the best to me.

I couldn't care less about...
Back to page topI couldn't care less about football. I watched the show for Prince.
He indeed put on an awesome show - a very safe show, focused on his all-time hits, but a great one at that.
That purple symbol guitar alone was enough to make me squeal. That, combined with the rainy Purple Rain, his James-Brown-style "owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!"s and the medley of hits and covers, made it a great show.
However, I was left wishing for two things: 1) A James Brown cover (after all, James, one of the people who inspired Prince, recently died), and 2) An up-tempo song to end the performance, preferably from his latest, "3121," one of his best albums in years.
