All-Stars disappoint, but final, troublesome inning does not

No votes yet

It's nice to see some pitchers struggle in a Major League Baseball
All-Star Game. They usually dominate the best hitters in the game, but
last night, J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez -- two of the top closers
in the game -- gave up a couple runs, walked the bases loaded, and had
a chance to lose the game for the American League.

They didn't lose it, but it was close: 5-4.

I was disappointed in several defensive efforts, including Torii Hunter's non-dive on a bloop he usually catches.

It
made me happy to see Alex Rodriguez play poorly, lounging enough to let
a bad hop turn into a double and getting thrown out by a million miles
at the plate by the real best player in baseball, Ken Griffey Jr.

Ichiro
Suzuki almost disappointed, too, as he posed for his home run that hit
the wall. Griffey might have limited Ichiro to a single or double, but
the speedster from Seattle turned a funky carrom into the first-ever
inside-the-parker in the 78-year history of the MLB All-Star Game.

Anyway,
overall the lackluster play (i.e. no hustle, lazy errors) was not what
I wanted to see. The exciting game made up for it a bit.

I agree with the lackluster play comment about the all-star game. It is dissapointing to see all stars not give their full effort.

That being said, the last inning was one of the most exciting innings of baseball I've ever seen.

Do you think National League manager, Tony Larussa should have pinch hit Albert Pujols?

Or was saving him for potential extra-inning play the right decision?

I love that the AL won the game, but how do you keep one of the best hitters in baseball on the bench with the bases juiced and the game on the line?

All-Star managers are never in their right minds. There is a lot of pressure to be kosher about how you use players. I haven't seen the numbers, but would it have be appropriate for NL LaRussa to pinch hit his guy in favor of another possibly just-as-clutch All-Star?

Likewise, AL manager Jim Leyland to pick a team full of Detroit Tigers, to pick on of his pitchers to start, or to put the voted-in fielders at the top in the lineup?

Kosher, kosher, kosher. Very politically correct. Just realize that this is not a real game -- that's why we liked that final inning so much.

And if you remember Bud Selig's worst decision as commissioner a few years back, there is no such thing as extra innings in an All-Star game.
