2-for-7 in a little more than 2 games

I skipped my softball games this week -- and it's a good thing, too. On Tuesday, I opted out of softball and instead worked on my coverage of the Jordan American Legion baseball team. Well, those stories barely made it into the paper, I finished them so late.

Bad, bad editor.

So I skipped softball this week. But I attended last week.

One of my teams, Hoggsbreath, decided to move out of the Blaine league. We were going to switch to Forest Lake or some other league way up north of anywhere I would normally patronize, but instead, the team isn't playing anywhere.

My other just-as-silly team, the Pink Sox, switched from Como Park to Rice-Arlington in St. Paul. It's a little bit further for me to drive than Como, but not too far.

I'm pitching again. Did OK in the first game. We lost, though, due to lack of hitting.

In the second game, I caught. I've decided that catcher is my favorite position. I used to call myself a second baseman, and I also have had to play some outfield for the Pinks.

My batting average is disappointing so far. I went 2-for-7. In softball, that's not good.

But one of my all-too-rare hits was an almost triple. It was a super-hard shot down the
third-base line that the third baseman touched. He decided to go after it, and the shortstop just stood and stared.

I was at second base by the time they got the ball, and nobody was covering third base. As I turned second base, the shortstop received the ball from the outfield. I might have had just enough time to get past the shortstop and make him race me to third base. I refrained, and I regret it.

Oh, and did I tell you that our umpire didn't show up? The opposing team was really nice, and we just played anyway. It counts as an official game.

We were in the seventh inning of a soon-to-be-over game, and the next teams to play showed up along with an umpire. Then, the umpire puffed up his chest and kicked us off the field!

We needed to play one inning. Seriously! What a creep!

We switched to another nearby field, which had no lights, and played until dark.

So I actually was 2-for-7 in a little more than two games.
