Days get longer before the solstice

An interesting note:

Dec. 21 is the first day of winter, and also the winter solstice, or the day the sun is at the southernmost point in the sky for us northern hemispherers. But our sunsets are already starting to get later. Sunrise Dec. 14 was at 7:45 a.m., sunset was at 4:31 p.m. On Dec. 15, the sun came up at 7:46 a.m. and went down at 4:32 p.m. Today it came up at 7:45 a.m. and is supposed to go down at 4:33 p.m....
