What do you think about building a swimming pool in Jordan? Is it needed? By whom?
Should the schools or city be involved in funding it? Who pays to get in? What programs run out of it? Who's in charge, then?
How do we get this thing done?

The Jordan Aquatic Community...
Back to page topThe Jordan Aquatic Community Center committee presented a proposal to the Jordan Parks and Recreation Board on Monday night. Park board members still had questions, as they should, but the word from the pool committee is that members felt like their presentation met a favorable response with the board.
The park board is considering a recommendation for a feasibility study if residents show enough support for constructing a pool.

Back to page topI am THRILLED that the meeting went well. The Jordan community needs a public swimming pool! Keep up the good work.
PS- I would never allow my children to swim in Mill Pond. The lawn chemicals and pollution that collect in a run off pond are dangerous. I hope the city council understands that simply dredging the Mill Pond will not make it a suitable public swimming facility.

Back to page topI'd like to see a pool as well. BUT, I also don't want it to be too big of a tax burden. The property taxes in Jordan are starting to get ridiculous. I would be ok with losing money on start up costs, and then after it is establish, I would want the pool to at least be close to breaking even year after year.
Then as far as the millpond, I see the pond as a huge asset to Jordan. I love to fish there. But the fish because of the small weedless area can not grow and are all very tiny. And because they are in such a small area, there is no challege to catch them. Every cast results in a puny fish. Dredging will be good for the pond, but is dredging a long term or short term fix to the problem? If lawn chemical runoff is truly a problem how do we prevent that from hurting the pond?
Jordan Aquatic Center...
Back to page topJordan Aquatic Center .....Thanks Mathias for starting this forum...I was at the Park and Rec Board Meeting Monday night and it was a good discussion. The board is interested in learning more which is a great next step. Do you think you could do an online poll sometime with a simple yes or no question of are you in favor of the Jordan Community Aquatic Center? It would be interesting to see what those results would look like as one sample only.
My hope is that the pool and the mill pond situation do not become an either or option in the future. My hope would be that we can have both as landmarks in our community. The millpond is great and I would like to see it clean too so we can have the fountain back out in the water.

Back to page topA pool-related poll is a good idea. I'll work on that, but I'm not sure that I can ask a simple enough question to require distincly yes-or-no responses. There are so many issues related to the pool proposition.
It might be better to include answer options that point to the reasons some people are supportive of or opposed to the idea of using tax money for a pool. Don't you think that would be a more telling poll?
I don't think the Mill Pond and the pool issues are tied to each other.

HOLD THE PHONE!! I think...
Back to page topHOLD THE PHONE!! I think getting people's impression on their desires for the pool would be extremely helpful. As far as taxes....well, I think we are very premature to discuss any project funding impacts on the individuals of the community.
One of the benefits of the Feasibility Study would be to establish not only whether the Jordan Community has the demographic makeup to support the project, but we'd also learn potential first costs, anticipated operating costs, the makeup of potential funding sources for the project (i.e. some combination of private and public financing, maybe even grant participation).
Let's not make the mistake of giving people the incorrect expectation that they are going to have to foot the bill for a pool until we have an idea what might lie ahead.
Our committee's goal has always been rooted in bringing a summer recreation venue to the community in a manner that makes us wonder how we ever lived without it! I know one thing....there were many times during the "dog days" of last summer, when the mercury was bouncing around that 100-degree mark, that I would have paid everyone's admission to the a Jordan Pool!
I remember the first talk...
Back to page topI remember the first talk about a pool in Jordan. It was the "Dream come True in '92!" That was 1992.....we have talked about a pool for a long time and it is very much needed in this town. A pool provides so much to the town. It will give us jobs for the young adults as lifeguards, it will give us a place to offer classes like swimming, scuba classes. It will also give us a place for our youth of all ages to hang out. One thing this town lacks. What do our youth have to do in the summer? Swim in dangerous places like the Millpond and Sand Creek. Now I know...I spent many days in the Millpond and Sand Creek and I also witnessed the day a friend of mine broke his nexk in Sand Creek. I guess the new slogan should read "Forget the Lake, bring on the pool in 2008"

To answer the 'Editorial' question - 'Who needs a pool?' - that's easy, Jordan needs a pool as a recreational outlet for young and, yes, even for old(er) people.
I have yet to hear of anyone 'earning' a DUI, getting hooked on drugs, speeding or robbing a bank in a swimming pool. Iraq is providing a host of problems, many generated by young people who have nothing to do in their spare time.
Jordan doesn't need that. It might be found that taxes for crime prevention are less than those for crime apprehension, prosecution and incarceration.
