The old-fashion variety of either of these sodas is the best -- I love the vanilla flavor of a good cream soda. But, root beer with a scoop of ice cream in it really can't be beat!
Root Beer all the way. And something with a bit of bite to it helps. Barqs is the best with Frostop a distant second. Mug root beer is an abomination and should be stopped. Would you really trust the company that created Sierra Mist to get root beer right?
Straight A&W is probably about as good as it gets, but I’d say that the soda for which I get the most cravings (aside from ginger ale) is cream soda. Root Beer can be had almost anywhere, but cream soda is a lot less prevalent and a lot more of a special treat.
My favorite is 1919 Root Beer. Schell's Brewery in New Ulm makes it. It can be hard to find, though. It's only sold by the keg so you need to find a restaurant/bar/bowling alley/etc that has it on tap.
I like both to tell you the truth. But one thing I used to really like that I can't get here is Burch beer.
There are several things I can't get here that I kind of miss, like kimmel wick rolls, real polish sausage, real perogies, real chicken wings......sigh***
I believe you can buy 1919 rootbeer by the keg at Jordan Wine and Spirits. We did it for all our kids' graduation parties. Thinking of rootbeer brings back lots of memories of my first job as a carhop (no rollerskates) at the A&W in Shakopee. Mmmm! Rootbeer in those big frosty mugs was delicious with a side of their famous beer batter onion rings. The drive-in was on 1st Ave. where the Burger King is now. I work about a block from there now, but no hustling root beer for me. Now I sit in a cubicle and work on a computer. I'm making more money, but don't receive tips like I did then. Sigh!
