Baseball winter meetings

» Read similar stories filed under:

Yeah, yeah, I know it has gotten to be a cliche that there is no offseason anymore for the major sports. There is certainly nothing like the NFL Draft, but I must say I love the baseball hot stove league.

The rumors just run rampant in baseball, and although it is futile to dream about, and half of them are false, but it is interesting fodder.

Of course, the Twins with Johan this year adds to the intrigue.

The baseball winter meetings started in Nashville today. Insiders say it is going to be one of the busiest winter meetings we've seen in a while with quite a few trades, etc.

ESPN has a blog ongoing with some of the latest rumors.

It can be found here:

What do you think will happen?

At this point I think I am wanting that Hughes, Cabrera, and another prospect trade for the Twins and Johan. Supposedly, Johan might even be forcing the Twins' hands at this point. Knowing Johan, he has a lot of pride, and I bet all the talk has just made him mad at this point. I bet he doesn't even want to return to the Twins now.

So, anyone else interested in the Hot Stove League and the baseball winter meetings?

I'm going to hold out hope...

I'm going to hold out hope that the Mets jump in at the last second and trade Reyes.

If not, send Santana to the Red Sox. Make those Yanks even more bitter.

Well the meetings are over,...

Well the meetings are over, and Santana is still a Twin.

Can't say I am too broke up about that, but they still haven't taken care of the other things they need to worry about, namely at CF and 3B at least, and many a SS.

I love having Johan, but I don't think they end up signing so they need to get the best deal they can get, so maybe that is why Smith is holding out a bit. We'll see. I would love for the Angels or Dodgers (and their nice prospects) to get involved. Not only to keep him off the east coast, but because I think the packages might be better.

However, they need to make a move to get a leadoff CF and a decent 3B. And quick. I heard Morgan Ensberg might be let go. I would like that move for the Twins.

That said, I don't think the Twins are contending anytime soon after that Tigers deal. What an incredible team they are putting together. What a lineup. What a rotation. Not to mention, they had already re-signed Kenny Rogers and acquired Edgar Renteria. Ouch, they're tough, and Cleveland won the division last year and looks to be just as good coming back.

So, if they can get something really good for Johan, I say do it. If they keep, OK I guess, It will be fun to watch him in a Twins uniform again.

I will say that a pitcher isn't worth that kind of money. They only play once a week. If they could get a decent pitcher (like Philip Hughes back) who might win almost as many games, and get other pieces you do it.

And I don't want Lester. Not that I dont like him, but I dont' see him as a top of the rotation guy. I would rather have Hughes, Buchholz, or Ellsbury if it came to that.

My vote is for one more...

My vote is for one more year of Johan Santana as a Twin. My team probably can't contend in 2008 without another miracle like in 2006. All the pieces have to fall together, and everybody has to have simultaneous career years.

If Santana's going to be a free agent after next season, he'll pitch the lights out. Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer have proved to be healthy staples in the lineup. Michael Cuddyer can put up a .280 batting average, 15 homers, and 80 runs batted in every year now for a reasonable price.

The pitching rotation has matured, the bullpen is solid (Joe Nathan isn't going anywhere), and we have some young hitters who just might turn out better than some people think.

But as we read in the Pioneer Press and Strib every day, the Tigers and the Indians are going to be good again next year. I don't know about the White Sox -- they look like they might be thin on pitching. Looks like the Marlins are having another trademark firesale. Too bad we didn't get in on the bidding for Miguel Cabrera or Dontrelle Willis, and too bad they went to the same team. Yikes!

In this division, it's all about beating each other and winning close games. I'd rather have Santana on the mound for those 3-2 games (in our favor, hopefully) than anyone else.

Props to the Twins new GM...

Props to the Twins new GM for not giving in to Boston or the Yanks.

I'd like to trade Santana, but we were not getting enough in return during the winter meetings.

Perhaps, the desperate Mets will cave and give us Reyes and a prospect or two. I'm holding out hope for that.

Jose Reyes would fill several of our needs. Is he affordable in years to come?
