I had this math teacher in...
Back to page topI had this math teacher in high school named Mr. James. I'm not sure he was my favorite, but he's the one I remember the most because he was a little off the wall. He like to talk to you like he was one of the boys.
Now, he's about 75 and he teachers yoga at the gym that I go to. So I see him every so often and I still call him Mr. James. And, of course, he remembers me.
It's weird to me to hear students today call some of their teachers by just their last name. I've been in Burnsville High School a number of times and heard students call teachers by just their last name and I'm always shocked by it,
That never happened when I went to school. It's always Ms. and Mr. - no matter how much you hated the teacher.
My favorite teacher’s name...
Back to page topMy favorite teacher’s name was Mrs. Jonas. She was my high school publications (newspaper) teacher, and my advance placement English teacher. Not only do I have her to thank for essentially starting me along the path to my future job, but also she was a great teacher. Almost all the skills I use on a daily basis (aside from math) came from her class. She also single handedly brought my love of reading back to life after years of being beaten down by the awful books we had to read for English class.
I remember having a discussion in class about escapist literature and realist literature where she essentially challenged me to stop reading escapist stories and grow up. I still consider myself an escapist reader, but I love that she challenged me like that, and it really did open up my eyes to all sorts of new types of reading.
We had a lot of good...
Back to page topWe had a lot of good teachers, Mr. James was certainly memorable. Favorites would be hard to pick out, there were of course a dozen years alone spent going through the Jordan schools. Mrs. Wall, Mrs. Gould, Roy Ohlman, Mrs. Casey, Cliff Klehr, Mr. Senske, that Jacobson guy back in like seventh grade. A lot of them made school more interesting, while still others looking back seem like they were working hard at just making it through the day. To be truthful, I could have done more to help all of them make it interesting.
