My two favorite books are...

My two favorite books are both at my parents’ house. Until I have a more permanent residence, I decided to leave most of my books there instead of hauling several boxes full of books from apartment to apartment. If they were here, though, I would certainly be typing excerpts from both "Cat’s Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut (one of the funniest books ever written) and "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien (just the best book ever written).

"The Old Man and the Sea" by...

Back to page top

"The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway just came back to my house.

I lent it to my darlin' mother, who suggested that her book club read it. It was her turn to choose the book for the all-female club to read, and she asked if I would suggest a classic.

While stories about marlins and Joe DiMaggio aren't expected to go over well with a group of women, the club's reviews of the book were disappointing at best. Some of them even said they hated it. Others alluded to the depth of the book's content -- it's metaphors about life.

For me, "The Old Man and the Sea" is a short, slick story that I can't put down. It's a two-hour read.

To say that Hemingway is one of my favorite writers is not a cliche. I'm not jumping on any bandwagons. I just can't get enough of the eloquent style, they way he uses words. No wonder why he was and is so popular.
