I agree that it can be...
Back to page topI agree that it can be pretty hard to walk downtown, but at the same time I think part of the blame belongs with the pedestrians. The other day, while my parents were visiting, a pedestrian started walking across the street right in front of their car. My dad had to slam on his brakes. They couldn’t see the pedestrian waiting at the intersection because she was standing behind a parked car until she started crossing. I’d stop and let a pedestrian cross if I saw someone waiting at the corner, but they can be hard to see.
Safety on the downtown roads...
Back to page topSafety on the downtown roads is an issue. I don't know if the police department's numbers show that, but I tend to lean toward Lucy825's side.
Drivers should can take it easy and make more complete stops at stop signs, taking the time to look both ways. And pedestrians could intentionally do a better job of crossing the streets at the corners. The bottom line is that we don't want pedestrians injured or, worse yet, killed.
A little caution is preferable to any life-altering accidents.

My family and I live in...
Back to page topMy family and I live in downtown Jordan. It is an often ocurrence that we attempt to cross HWY 21 on foot or bike, especially in summer and fall. I agree with lucy825- on average I bet we wait 10 cars before someone will stop to let you cross. And then you have to hope that cross traffic will also stop! It's not always possible to step out in front of parked cars. Often we feel like we're halfway into the crosswalk before we can truly see. It's run and hope you don't get hit! Not very safe. I often wonder where the PD is when pedestrians are trying to cross and you have many, many cars breaking a state law. Trying to pull onto HWY21 it is very difficult to see over parked cars.
I also agree with the parked...
Back to page topI also agree with the parked cars on Hwy 21 being a problem. I drive a school bus in town and at least I can see over them when I pull out. It is very hard to see pedestrians that are on the corner with the cars parked upto the corners. Maybe they could lenghten the "yellow" area of the curb near the corners, but then I would expect the businesses to say that there is not enough "downtown" parking.
What about these "crosswalk signs" that are around town. Do you ever notice them? There is one down by Empire Wok. Look hard, you might see it. It's chained to a post, on the curb. Almost impossible to see, due to the fact of cars parked in front of it. Why not take these signs are place them right in the middle of the road so people actually see them. Drive down Hwy 19 in New Prague, they have theres right in the middle of the road. I am not saying it will help at all, however it can't hurt any either.
I think we have been lucky here in town not seeing a death in the crosswalk yet.
I have to agree with these...
Back to page topI have to agree with these comments. Besides just about getting creamed every time you pull out to see whose coming, it sure seems like a lot of people coming thru town totally disregard the speed limit. ;-0
