Tell that to the Dallas Cowboys in the Herschell Walker trade in the late 1980s. The Vikings gave up a boat-load up picks for a guy everyone thought was going to be missing link for the purple. He wasn't.
Turned out Emmitt Smith and some of the other Pro Bowl guys Dallas used with our draft picks won them a Super Bowl. Emmitt Smith was pretty good wasn't he.
Although, I do agree with you to a certain extent on over-valuing draft picks. Every team does it and it gets very old. And I like this trade by the Vikkes.
Jared Allen was a fouth-rounder by KC, so if you know what you are doing on draft day, and you hit more than you miss, then draft picks are pretty valuable.
I'll go back to what I always say - or Eric Clapton says. In terms of draft picks, "It's in the way that you use it; boy don't you know."
Well there is a point where it becomes to steep of a price.
But my point is that NFL teams would rather have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd pick over a proven player in the NFL. Granted you need draft picks to give your team depth and competition but if you can get a proven NFL starter for a draft pick shouldn't you do that everytime?
Don't you think the Vikes wished they traded away the seventh pick overall when they selected Troy Williamson?
Of course, if you can pick stud players everytime than the draft picks are worth it. But I would guess maybe 1 out 4 first round picks make it?
Lets look at the Vikings recent 1st picks and see if they were good picks
2007 -Adrian Peterson - so far, so good
2006 - Chad Greenway - solid player
2005 - Troy Williamson -BUST
Eramus James - BUST
2004 - Kenezia Udeze - between bust and serviceable
2003 - Kevin Williams - Pro Bowler
2002 - Bryant McKinnie - Been Ok, not great
2001 - Michael Bennett - BUST
2000- Chris Hovan - serviceable/Bust
Eight draft picks and two Pro Bowlers and two more serviceable players.
My point, take the proven player over the crapshoot of the draft.
I’m not a big fan of the trade. I’m a Packer fan, and obviously having a good pass rusher coming at our young quarterback isn’t going to be the best for my team’s future, but I don’t like the trade that much from a Vikings standpoint either. The team already had a good defense. The main questions were on the offensive side of the ball. That’s where the draft picks could have come in handy. Of course, the Vikings don’t have a great history of picking well (like Todd said), so maybe that isn’t much of a loss at all.
As a Packer fan, I look at Green Bay and see both offensive and defensive units that were built through the draft and are stocking the team for years to come. Obviously, the Vikings think their time to shine is now, which is why they aren’t looking toward the future in the draft. But even with a good defense for the next couple of years, it will be hard to win if you can’t score any points. The Vikes are going to have to run almost their entire offense through Peterson, and teams will be able to stack up against the run.
Long story short – they should have used the picks on offensive weapons.
Yeah, but look at some of the picks in the later rounds:
James Jones (2007 round 3 who could be an OK second or third receiver), Mason Crosby (2007 round 6 kicker who's pretty good for a kicker), Greg Jennings (2006 round 2 was very good last year), Will Blackmon (2006 round 4 could be a pretty good corner this year), Nick Collins (2005 second round), Brady Poppinga, Aaron Kampman, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Mike McKenzie, Donald Driver, Mike Wahle, Matt Hasselback... Ok, so not all of them still play for the pack, but the list goes on with some pretty good later picks.
Maybe the first round is hit or miss, but I don't think the draft is overrated. In the long run, I think the Vikes will miss their picks from the later rounds.
Not any more. The pick now...
Back to page topNot any more. The pick now belongs to the KC Chiefs. We traded it away, along with two third-rounders for NFL sack leader Jared Allen.

NFL teams over value draft picks. Teams would rather have a draft pick over proven player already in the league. That doesn't make sense to me.

Packers first round picks...
Back to page topPackers first round picks haven't been any better:
2000 - Bubba Franks - serviceable
2001 - Jamal Reynolds - BUST
2002 - Javon Walker - 1 good year/traded away
2003 - Nick Barnett - Really good
2004 - Ahmad Carroll - serviceble
2005 - Aaron Rodgers - don't know
2006 - A.J. Hawk - good, not great
2007 - Justin Harrell -Who?
Nothing great there expect Nick Barnett. Again proving my point.
