I don't know if military stories of 'the big one' WWI fit the bill of war stories welcomed in this column, but ...
My Dad enlisted in WWI in the US Navy and was assigned, immediately, to the Navy Airforce as a 'radio operator'. Those days, radio operator meant letting a long wire trail from the aircraft and using that as an antenna to send 'International Code' telegraph messages. Dad said the Navy's 'telegraph instructor' telegraphing skills were so poor that it was difficult to read the transmisson. As soon as they discovered Dad was an experienced (railroad) telegraph operator he was made instructor and never did get off the ground as a radio operator. However, he often said, "We still won the war".

In this forum, I'd especially like to hear about Iraq-related stories or debate policy in Iraq. To solicit other past war stories, try creating a forum. You can click on Add Content at the top of the page and fill out forms from there. Call 952-492-2224 if you need any assistance.
As for your story, I love the last line "We still won the war."

Since you took my Dad's experience in the Navy, perhaps I can tell you my experience in the Army. I was 'trained' as a RR telegraph operator in a 6 week school at Fort Warren, WY and sent to Luzon. No railroads were operating on Luzon, so the Army (naturally) sent me to a trucking company. We had more than 1100 trucks and handled all the truck traffic on Luzon. When I came home on furlough before going to Luzon, my Dad asked me to visit his M&St. L office so that he could show me off in uniform. While there, the telegraph clattered away and Dad told me 'they are sending your name, why don't you answer them?' I did but no one could read my 'sending', even me. Dad thought the Army could have spent its time training someone other than me as a telegrapher. I say again, 'We still won the War.'
