World's biggest

My former hometown is home to the World’s Largest “M.” I’ve also lived in a town that was home to a giant fiberglass Viking (Alexandria) and visited towns that housed the world’s largest chocolate chip cookie (Ripon, Wis.) and a giant statue of Paul Bunyan (Brainerd, although I couldn’t find it). What’s the best “world’s largest” or giant tourist attraction you’ve ever seen?

Back to page topThat's what I figured when I left Alexandria to find it - something that tall should be easy to find, right? Wrong. I probably could have gotten there if I would have stopped to ask for directions. But I hate asking for directions.
THE PRAIRIE CHICKEN! It was...
Back to page topTHE PRAIRIE CHICKEN! It was a landmark -- and a mile marker -- for me as I made the frequent drive between St. Cloud (my hometown) and Moorhead (where I attended college).
When the prairie chicken appeared, I knew I had about 30 more miles to go before I reached Moorhead. My friends and I went to "the chicken" to have our photos taken with the regional celebrity. Some (who shall go unnamed) planned field trips to the chicken, where they would party under the wings of the big bird.
I haven't seen that chicken in years...might be time for a road trip.
BIG Paul Bunyans can be...
Back to page topBIG Paul Bunyans can be found in several places in northern Minnesota. In Bemidji, Paul and Babe stand on the shore of Lake Bemidji in a city park with a visitors' center. Almost every time you drive by them, there are folks standing beneath, mugging for the camera. When the Olympic curlers team from Bemidji won the gold, Paul sported a gold medal and a curling cap. Very dapper. My favorite Paul Bunyan is in Akeley, Minnesota. He crouches down with a cupped hand, and visitors are cradled in his palm as they are photographed. Then there is Lucette Diana Kensack, Paul Bunyan's big girlfriend, who stands on the shore of Birch Lake in Hackensack, Minnesota, just off Hwy. 371. I believe her large hoop skirt houses the lawn-mowing equipment for the lakeside park where she stands.
