This year’s model
April 17, 2008 - 10:58am — Brandon
I was going to start putting together my warm-weather playlist, but I guess I jumped the gun. Today’s colder and dreary weather has me feeling glum. It’s certainly not the kind of weather that calls for open car windows and rocking tunes. I love to drive around during the summer with my windows rolled down and my music turned up. That’s one of the best parts of summer, in my opinion. Last year I made a summer-specific playlist that I could pop on almost any time the weather called for it. (You can find my list at http://www.jordannews.com/community/brandon/cruisin-sunday-afternoon.) My plan was to get another list ready for an inaugural run tonight, but the cold weather intervened. The weather is a blessing in disguise, I suppose, because it gives me more time to think about which songs will make the cut. The easiest thing to do would be to use the same summer playlist as last year. It isn’t like my tastes have changed, after all, and all the songs listed last year are still great cruising tunes. But what has changed is the music pool from which I pull the songs – it’s grown substantially larger as I’ve been less and less able to say no to used CDs. And I suppose my tastes have changed slightly. I could throw a few more country-esque tunes on the playlist this year and maybe even some more folky songs, but I don’t know if either genre can hold up to a sunny day drive the way a rocker by Led Zeppelin could. What do you think, folks? Any tips or summer songs that could make my warm-weather driving playlist better?

One of the best songs ever - no doubt in my top five of all-time.

I think I’ve already got...
Back to page topI think I’ve already got one possibility for an addition to the list: “Getting Better” by The Beatles. What could make a day brighter than the Fab Four letting you know that things are on the way up?
A couple of other songs that have recently popped up in my mind for consideration on the summer playlist are “Lloyd, I’m ready to be Heartbroken” by Camera Obscura and “Beautiful Day” by U2. And I’m thinking I should include an Elvis Costello song and maybe on by The Jam.
I think maybe I’ll make it a double CD this year.
Update: I’m about halfway...
Back to page topUpdate: I’m about halfway through my music collection in iTunes, and my playlist for this year’s summer cruising is currently about 260 songs long. When I get through all my music, I expect that number to jump to around 400, and then I'll whittle it down to 20 or so for a one-CD playlist.
Is it weird that I am this excited about making a playlist? Yes, but I’m OK with that.
