Last night, my girlfriend Molly was stuck in the snow and traffic because she was trying to drive around the Twin Cities metro during rush hour in an attempt to get to Jordan to see me. Not the best decision (on both our parts – I didn’t try to stop her), especially given that visiting me is not an appealing destination.
But it got me thinking about the decisions I’ve made to ignore possibly hazardous driving conditions. In an attempt to maintain previously made plans. So here’s a list of some of the dumbest driving decisions I’ve made in the past year alone:
Last year, during the biggest snowfall of the year (I believe it was record setting for the amount of snow that fell in a short period of time), I drove from Jordan to downtown Minneapolis and back in one night just to play board games with some friends that I had only known for a few months.
Also last year, I drove through a snow storm to get back to my hometown for the weekend – there was nothing in particular going on that weekend, I just wanted to see my family. A trip that normally takes about five hours had become a seven-hour trek by the time I finally arrived safe and sound at my destination.
Just last week, I drove through the first snowstorm of the year to visit Molly for the day and to go to her staff Christmas party. Not only was my initial drive longer than it should have been (it went from taking me 45 minutes to get to her apartment to taking me 90 minutes to get to her apartment), but I also found myself stuck there when the snow didn’t stop coming down. I spent the night sleeping on her couch.
How about you? What are some of the poor weather decisions you’ve made?
I drove a couple miles without windshield wipers last night.
Well, technically, I had a passenger-side wiper but, since the driver's side wiper was taking a coffee break, the one on the right was trying -- unsuccessfully -- to reach over lefty and clear a minimal swath for me. However, since the passenger wiper had to cross over top of the driver's wiper, it wasn't exactly touching the window at all the pertinent spots.
I knew that lefty's problem was a loose bolt because of the wiggle it gave when I tried to troubleshoot it. But, without tools or light (it was after 4 p.m. after all), I opted to swing into the Goodyear off Canterbury Road. Within 10 minutes, I was back on the road with a clear view through the windshield and both lefty and righty waving at me.
I drove from Bloomington to Jordan. I started at 4:00 PM. I took side streets south to Old Shakopee Road and then went west to get onto Hwy 169. I SAT on Old Shakopee Road for over 25 minutes without moving an inch.
Once I got to 169, traffic was slow but was moving.
This morning, it took 1 hour and 45 minutes.
There was a bad accident at Hwy 169 and 69 near Shakopee that backed up 169 heading north to Shakopee.
I hear more snow is coming in time for tomorrow's drive home. Ugh.

Thanks guys!
