Sleep dressing

» Read similar stories filed under:

I haven’t been sleeping well lately. Last night, I was really cold before I went to bed, so I turned on a space heater and my electric mattress pad. Then I woke up in the middle of the night sweating. It’s the second night in a row that I’ve been tossing and turning.

Sunday night (or Monday morning, I’m not sure) I even got up at some point, ripped a drawer out of my dresser, and put on a pair of socks from that drawer. I have a vague recollection of doing this, but absolutely no recollection as to why I did it.

I wish I could say this was an isolated incident, but it isn’t. I’ve gotten up in the middle of the night before, always doing something weird. I’ve also gotten up in the middle of the night (while still mostly sleeping) to watch TV, make macaroni and cheese, and call a friend. Once, I spent a good 20 minutes getting ready for the day at 2 a.m. before realizing my mistake.

I've never been much of a sleepwalker (I prefer to remain in bed and dream crazy dreams) but my little sister has done some unconscious wandering.

Once, when we were kids, she mistook my parents' room for the bathroom, pull out a dresser drawer and sat down to do her business.

Another time, we were camping and I was awakened by the sound of the RV door closing. I looked outside before jumping from my bunk in time to stop her from walking off the end of the pier.

You are a better sibling than I – I probably would have let my sister go into the lake and then made sure she was alright.

I'm sure your little sister would appreciate you voicing those stories to the world via the Internet. Ha! Next time she gets Googled, all the dirty laundry shows up.

Today ... maybe. But she was only about 12 and a non-swimmer at the time.
