My budget won’t budge

No votes yet

I recently became a credit card holder. I was pretty excited about it, because this is my first credit card. And before you tell me of all the pitfalls of credit, I’ll tell you that I am only using the card to purchase things that I would otherwise purchase with my debit card and checking account – no fancy spending sprees for me.

Which is why I was shocked to get my first bill last week. I racked up quite the number of sales through my first month, and I didn’t use the card for anything I wasn’t already buying. But rather than a slow trickle out of my checking account through a debit card, I get to see an entire month of spending all at once, and I don’t like it.

And so I’m budgeting now. My goal is to reduce my spending by at least $100 in my second month. That means cutting out unneeded spending, though, which has been pretty hard so far. My focus this month is on fast food and restaurants, which made up most of my bill last month. I don’t think it should be much of a problem to cut those restaurants out of my routine entirely. I may also have to reevaluate my disposition toward CD, DVD, and book purchases.

What would you cut out of your budget in order to save a few extra bucks? Where, aside from things like utility bills and mortgage payments, does most of your money go?

My budget advice -
1) Never buy a new car - self made millinaires rarely buy new cars
2) When you receive a windfall - even a small one, save it. Or pay off debt. Don't spend it on a new ipod, or whatever to keep up with the jones'
3) Don't keep up with the jones' you don't like them anyway so don't try to impress them.
4) When you get paid, put the money into savings first, and then pay bills.
5) Save at least 10% of your earnings
6) Put your money into American Funds
7) Have $1000 in an emergency fund ( I put the $1000 in the online account ING -which currently has 4.25% interest)
8) Buy a house that is within your means - stay away from Adustable Rate Mortgages (ARMs)
9) If you need cash quick - have a garage sale or sell stuff on Ebay.
10) Take advantage of any matching funds your employer offers.

As far as credit cards, if you can pay off the entire balance each month and not overspend your means, then some cashback bonuses are nice and using the card to establih good credit is not a bad thing to do- but if you have a history of credit card debt, don't budget your expenses, and generally not good with money, then the credit card companies will take you for a huge ride and make your life miserable.

Those are all good tips. Unfortunately, though, I already own a new car – so that one’s off the list. The rest of your advice seems relatively doable, though, so I’ll definitely take it into consideration.

I've cut the Internet and cable out of my budget, but I'm not sure it helps my productivity at work. It certainly helps my budget.

I also bought the cheapest slightly used car on the lot, rather than a new one.
