I’m winning at better health

No votes yet

About a week ago, the office of the Jordan Independent switched its water sources. Before the switch, anytime I wanted to take a drink of water, I had to fill up a cup at the water cooler in our back room. After the switch, I have the option of grabbing a 1-pint bottle and brining it back to my desk.

I like this new system for two reasons:

  1. I’m drinking more water, which is theoretically more healthy for me.
  2. I’m totally blowing away the competition by drinking more water than anyone else in the office.

See, in order to determine the demand for supplied water, our company has given each of the three employees in the JI office their own stack of water bottles. Each stack contains three packages each of 24 1-pint bottles of water. We’re asked only to take water bottles from our own stack, so that they can determine how much water each of us is drinking. A little unusual, I’ll grant you, but it seems fair enough.

The bottles really are helping me drink more water each day, because I can keep a bottle at my desk while I work. The only problem is that I’m a competitive person. Now I see water consumption as a race to see which employee can finish hs or her stack first. I’m not drinking any more water than I feel thirsty for each day. My lead is tenuous, but I’m still winning!

In essence, each employee has 72 bottles of water to finish in the first round. Here’s how the totals stack up so far:

  • Brandon – 57 bottles to go (15 bottles down)
  • Mathias – 58 bottles to go (14 bottles down)
  • Nancy – 71 bottles to go (one bottle down)

Mathias pulled into an early lead, but I’ve slowly and steadily been catching up in the past few days. I passed him just this morning.

Just finished No. 15. It's all tied up. And since I have at least another hour of work to do, let me assure you that I'll be ahead well before you get into the office tomorrow.

Good luck, chump. I'm a water-drinking fool. The way I see it, you don't really stand a chance in this race. I might even drink Nancy's water and mine before you finish yours.

Mathias has pulled away with a clear lead, but with him out of the office today, I’m hoping to make up some ground. Here’s how the totals stack up after week two:

  • Mathias – 41 bottles to go (31 bottles down)
  • Brandon – 43 bottles to go (29 bottles down)
  • Nancy – 71 bottles to go (One bottle down)

If you are drinking that much water, make sure you are getting enough sodium. The body can not handle a lot of water without the sodium.

Thanks for the tip. I think I may actually be low on the sodium intake with all this water (especially on days that find my skipping both breakfast and lunch).

Potato chips are high fat, starch, and salt.

Better ways to get sodium/salt: add a small amount of Morton Lite salt to your entree (eggs, chicken breast, lean steak, turkey).

Thanks, swansonmej. How do you know?

I've never paid much attention to the Ps and Qs of a healthy diet. As a swimmer, I have always had a high metabolism, so I barely know what is a calorie. More recently, I've been swimming less and growing impatient with my lack of knowledge about topics related to my health.

How do I start to learn about living healthier?

I have been on a doctor recommended diet for over a year. The information I passed along to you was taken from the pamphlets that received when I started the diet. I have lost 55 pounds and counting.

While you may not want to lose pounds, I think the diet plan is great in that it spells out what I should be eating (less sugar, less fat, and less sodium). Most diets focus on sugar and fat.

I feel much better while losing pounds at the same time.

Slim4Life

I've tried other diets in the past but
this one worked for me. You eat your own
foods. It is a matter of learning what you
should eat and how much.

There are locations across the metro. I go
to the center in Lakeville.

Thanks. I've heard of Slim4Life, but didn't know anyone who's tried their program. They have an office near where I work in Eden Prairie. I'll have to check it out.

Maybe you can take lessons from my sister. She not only eats very little meat, her produce is mostly organic. She also practices yoga, which she claims can cure any ailment.

She recently adopted two children -- a 9-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl -- and has already trained them about avoiding fast food. Although they frequented such places in their former life, Kayla told me that they don't go to McDonald's now "because it's a cesspool" and that the food at Taco Bell "is vile."

She proudly tells me about her healthy food choices nearly every time I talk to her and her favorites are yogurt and banana.

My sister claims the kids love tofu pot pie, as well, but I haven't asked them about it yet.

Maybe I should rephrase the question: How do I live healthier and not gag while doing so? Tofu? No way. I'd rather be fat.

Tofu isn't required to live healthier. Living healthier is about making better choices. A good place to start is www.mypyramid.gov

It provides some good info about good food choices, serving sizes, etc. It also has an area where you can track your food intake and exercise (although I personally like www.fitday.com better for that).

En route to their Thanksgiving Day destination on Wednesday, my sister's kids told me they would be having tofurkey for dinner. I told them I would rather eat dirt.

In response to a "Happy Thanksgiving" text I got from my sister on Thursday, I asked how the tofurkey was and she replied that her mother-in-law substituted with a hormone-injected bird instead.

At least her husband and the kids were happy -- as well as everyone else who was there, I'm sure.

Tofurkey? Never heard of it. But I googled it:

And there's a photo on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofurkey. Mmmmm!

With the bottles running out, and the weather cold and dry in the winter months, I’ve made a real push back into contention for this thing. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Mathias has been out of the office for most of the month.

Here’s where the totals stand for the stretch run:

Brandon – 6 bottles to go (66 bottles down)
Mathias – 15 bottles to go (57 bottles down)
Nancy – 71 bottles to go (one bottle down)

Look at healthy me! I have 10-1/2 bottles to go. Brandon still has three left, so that gives me roughly a 1-1/2 days to catch up. I'm going to give this kid a run for his money.
