When we were kids, our TV...
Back to page topWhen we were kids, our TV was always on the blink -- in reality, my mom simply unplugged it -- so we had to go outside and play. Or, we could read a book, play board games, clean our rooms, etc. I actually learned how to cook during some of these TV "outages."
With four kids cooped up inside, my stay-at-home mom had to come up with some clever ways to keep her sanity.
I remember once when my brother had a friend from out in the country come and stay with us in the city for a week in the summer and we truly were without TV. It was no big deal to us because we were used to it, but the friend looked like a deer in headlights when he learned the sad news.
"No TV? What do you guys do?" We taught him how to explore the neighborhood and all sorts of fun outdoor activities. I'm not sure if he bought it, though; I don't remember him ever coming for another extended visit.
But, to help your cause, I suggest: finding good recipes and experimenting, bicycling, walking/hiking, cleaning -- or maybe get a dog, that'll keep you busy and entertained :-)
I'll have to keep that TV...
Back to page topI'll have to keep that TV trick in mind for when I have kids of my own.
I think it would actually be a lot more fun to live a week without TV if the weather was a little more like it was a few weeks ago – sunny and 75 degrees every day. Then I’d be happy to spend my time outside, walking through the park or things like that. But if I have to deal with rain and snow, I don’t know how happy I’ll be to be outside.
But trying my hand at cooking doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. Cleaning also sounds like a logical activity, and I do enjoy vacuuming (it’s the only household chore I don’t mind doing, but I don’t have much carpet in my apartment).

Back to page topHa, ha, ha. Judging from your past cooking experiences, Brandon, you might want to avoid learning "how to cook" by yourself. Find a better teacher. Or a recipe that you actually follow.

How can anyone think of...
Back to page topHow can anyone think of 'giving up' TV when programs such as 'Deal or No Deal' grace the airwaves. To see people try 'the luck of the draw' to win up to $1,000,000. is an enlightening experience. Hind sight is always - 20/20 - (you may already know that) but one of the overwhelming factors in 'Deal or No Deal' is greed. Contestants put 100 or several hundred thousand dollars ... they heve already won .... at risk hoping to get just a bit more. The problem is 'knowing when to fold them', and 'know when to walk away and know when to run'. Some drive home with 'what Paddy shot at'.

Back to page topI wouldn't want to miss an episode of 'Lost'. That's really the only show that I NEED to see every week. The other shows I watch I could miss and not feel "lost" if I missed a week here and there. I hope you make it the whole week, but I think the weather is conspiring against you. Good luck and cook safely!
Thanks for the well wishes....
Back to page topThanks for the well wishes. I was thinking I had a chance to make it the whole week until this morning. I casually grabbed the remote on my way to the kitchen and flipped on SportsCenter. It was on for a few minutes before I even realized what was up. I may be in trouble.
But missing “Lost” is exactly why I’m starting and ending on a Wednesday. If I haven’t already given in by Wednesday night, that will be my hardest test – having enough self control to not quit an hour early just for “Lost.”
Yea, outside of 'Lost' and a...
Back to page topYea, outside of 'Lost' and a couple other shows, I'd have no problems. I'd just delve into some music, catch up on reading and get tons of projects done. Another person in the house, though, might be found in a corner in the fetal position muttering something about no tv.
If you don't trust yourself...
Back to page topIf you don't trust yourself alone with the remote in your apartment, Brandon, try taking the batteries out as soon as you click "OFF" after "Lost." Then, when your week is up, you can plan a scavenger hunt to remember what you did with those batteries! Or you can just do the unplug thing and the remote won't respond no matter how hard you mash the buttons.
