ST. PAUL -- Minnesota employers cut 16,700 jobs in June, according to figures released today by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).
The agency said the state's unemployment rate in June rose to a seasonally adjusted 8.4 percent, up from 8.1 percent in May. The U.S. unemployment rate in June reached 9.5 percent.
A commentary by state Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook:
In a tough economy where every job counts, legislators received information from State Econoimist Tom Stinson that Minnesota stands to lose up to 4,700 jobs under Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s unallotment plan. Up to 600 of those jobs are going to be in education.
The news from Stinson came during a Legislative Advisory Commission (LAC) meeting. As chair of the Senate Tax Committee, I serve on the LAC.

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota unemployment rate edged up to a seasonally adjusted 8.2 percent in March, remaining below the U.S. rate of 8.5 percent, according to figures released today by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).
State employers eliminated 23,200 jobs in March, compared with the loss of 663,000 jobs nationwide during the month. Over the past year, job counts in both Minnesota and the nation have decreased 3.6 percent.
