Mr. Thomas Shaw will discuss Eatonville, a Euro-American farming village at Lake Calhoun led by Dakota Chief Cloud Man at the historic Pond House. Begun in 1828 with the assistance of Indian Agent Major Lawrence Taliaferro, the village existed until 1839 when Cloud Man moved his village to the Minnesota River Valley. To assist Cloud Man, Taliaferro enlisted Samuel and Gideon Pond, missionaries and expert farmers, who came to the area in May 1834. Thomas Shaw was the assistant site manager at Historic Fort Snelling for twenty years and actively works in the field of U.S. Indian policy.

Create your own mini log cabin using dowel “logs” and a small cardboard box at the historic Pond House. Learn about frontier construction, and hear stories about the Pond brothers’ first log cabin at Lake Calhoun, and the log Mission House in Bloomington. House tours 1:30 – 4 pm. Suggested donation $2, youth through high school are free. The Pond house is located in Pond Dakota Mission Park, 401 East 104th St., Bloomington, between Portland and Nicollet Aves. The Jordan Area Visioning Alliance (JAVA) will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Riverland Bank, 700 Seville Drive in Jordan.

JAVA will discuss observations, issues, options, and opportunities that impact the Jordan community as a whole.
