God, comfort us

Along with other members of my church congregation, I have been going through a simple exercise -- reading a daily Bible verse, making a request of God, and then praying for various people in the congregation.

Today is the last day of a month-long process, and I'm sorry to see it go. I've felt like a difference maker by being devoted to a joint cause with the rest of my church body. They surely will benefit from my work, and we all will be better for our collective prayers.

The verses assigned for today and yesterday hit me square in the heart.

One option that wasn't in the poll were the hours of the library. Each time that I have wanted to go to the library, it has been closed. It has never been open when I was able to stop by.

Snowy opening day

A few things about the snow and opening day of baseball season:

- When was the last time it snowed on opening day? On the night of the home opener? This seems rare.

- Aren't traffic jams on the way to the game just lovely? I'm looking forward to seeing 45,000 at a game again, but I'm hoping they aren't all getting there when I do -- at 5:50 p.m. for the 6:05 p.m. game.

- Won't it be wonderful when we have an open-air stadium?

- Maybe global warming will take care of these problems for us by 2010, when the Twins' new stadium opens up.

Tony Valek finished the National High School Senior Nationals with a 2-2 record. Wrestling at 140 pounds, Valek won his opening match 2-0 over Daniel Gudino of California. He lost a close match in the second round to Pennslyvania's Adam Healey 7-6. That sent him to the consolation bracket, where he met Sam McGregor of Virginia. Valek won that match and advanced to a match against Daniel Helena from Georgia. He lost that match to end his tournament and his chances to place.
