Today is the five-year anniversary of the day the Minnesota Twins franchise made its worst decision since letting Harmon Killebrew go to the Royals.
Five years ago, Dec. 16, 2002, the Twins released David Ortiz. Since then, he has hit more than 30 home runs and racked up more than 100 RBI every year. He has topped .300 three of the five years, put on astounding clutch-hitting displays, broken the Curse of the Bambino in his first World Series, won a second World Series, and become slightly less than a god in Boston.
Therefore, today is a black day for Minnesota, which wouldn't pay $2 million for the guy who turned out to be the best hitter in baseball, maybe the best since Killebrew himself.
